My 88 year old mother fell at home from and needed a partial hip replacement. Her surgery was preformed on a Tuesday evening at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL. By Friday they hastily released her, still in excruciating pain, to Avantara Rehab across the road, to a bed with clean sheets, but very dirty looking furnishings .
We understand this was not the remodeled section they show on their web site. She was there only a few hours and then sent to the ER and finally to Avanti Rehab in Niles, IL. since the Avantara Rehab was so dirty looking. One good “catch” by Avanti Wellness & Rehabilitation was that her blood pressure an hemoglobin had dropped seriously below normal. She went back to the ER and Lutheran General Hospital for an additional four days. Then, back to Avanti for 18-19 days in what she calls the “hell hole”.
The first night they put her in a private room, which was requested. The next 17 days were in a double room, not requested, with a roommate who moaned in pain and kept yelling for help for 1 1/2 hours with no one answering her call. Another roommate, after no one would come, finally crawled out of bed to use the toilet and fell in the doorway in the middle of the night. My mom had to get herself out of bed while in pain, go to the hallway and yell 15 times for help!
Finally, someone came and yelled at the lady for getting out of bed. Obviously, they are short staffed especially overnight, but mom could hear loud talking and laughing near her room at all hours… were they all on break together? Avanti web site shows “All Private Rooms” headlined on their home page…. not true. We repeatedly asked for a private room so my mom could possibly get some sleep, but never could get one.
Another fault with Avanti is the food they serve the patients. The site shows “Selective Menu” which mom requested numerous times to no avail. The food is brought and you have no choice; burned dry toast with no condiments, one piece of hard French toast stick with one cold sausage patty, a black skinned banana which the staff joked about could be used for banana bread, cheerios in a bowl with milk – but no spoon.
Other problems – not finding the person’s clothing for days. She requested to take a shower and got excuses until two days before she was discharged. That was nearly a month from the time she fell and had diarrhea (C-diff) too. Then there were problems with her telephone not working and couldn’t get calls, TV not working properly, and A/C so cold that she was freezing day and night and slept with a hooded fleece jacket most of the time. Was told there was nothing they could do about the temperature. Imagine having your elderly parent having to put up with a cold draft hitting you in the head all night when you are already sick and in terrific pain.
About a week into her stay she developed diarrhea that turned out to be C-diff. First, they said she didn’t have it, then changed their mind and moved her again in with another patient that also had it. Now she was quarantined for a week before she got out of there. Very few staff came in with the required gown and rubber gloves and they let the relatives in to visit without telling them anything about this highly contagious condition. Terrible hygiene conditions.
On discharge she was given a paper with exercises for her hip, but no information on C-diff or a follow-up. Five days after she completed her antibiotics, she has C-diff AGAIN. She has another week of meds and we are hoping for the best now. There were a few comforting, helpful CNAs and rehab “angels” that brought her an occasional alternative meal, socks, etc., but for the most part – Stay Away from Avanti. It does not deserve the 4 Star rating that is mentioned!
