Center for Orthopedic Rehabilitation (COR)

I have been and am being treated for a workman’s compensation injury at COR at the behest of the City of Los Angeles. I don’t receive any disability pay but have retired and draw my pension. When I first started going there I had been a victim of a Doctor Younai who was under contract with the city of LA to perform any needed carpal tunnel release procedures. Prior to him operating on my hand I had previously had surgery in 1985 and my hands (both done, consecutively, with amazing results. In 2005 my left hand had again become badly numb with tingling, no real pain just very uncomfortable. Physical therapy was tried with the only result being the numbness continued. So when they offered the surgery to redo the left wrist, I was eager due to the great results from before. I figured the state of the art could only have gotten better. Wrong! After the surgery and the anesthetic had worn off, my hand hurt badly. Therapy was tried again and only made it worse.
Background, I had a gastric bypass surgery in 2003 which actually worked. The surgery was the open type, I have a scar on my belly that looks like the old style C section, about a foot long from my diaphragm to the top of my umbilical cord scar aka belly button. I was told AFTER the bypass that “Oh by the way, you can’t take any NSAIDS.” Aspirin had been my pain killer of choice, very effective but now forbidden. Acetaminophen is useless by itself. The only other option was hydrocodone.
So they started me on 5/500 Vicodin brand and gradually upped my dose as needed till I became stable and relatively pain free with 60 mg a day of 10/325 Norco brand. I’ve been stable on that dosage since 2006.
Last year the CDC issued the advisory memo that suggested doctors should monitor their patients closely, which they were already doing, including urine tests to make sure I was actually taking them and not selling them. There’s no freaking way I would sell them, I need them. Without them I HURT. I hurt so bad I wake up in the middle of the night because it hurts.
Sorry, got off track a bit. I’ve read the memo, I’ve read the study that the CDC had done that reported that doctors were cutting patients off instead of doing what the memo said and that suicides are way up because patients had no way to control their pain. At least the doctors at COR didn’t cut me off cold turkey. They’ve been weaning me off 10% each month. I’m supposed to get by on just over 2 pills a day average this month. It’s not enough.
Despite my pleas, despite my giving him an annotated copy of the memo and the relevant studies they still cut me back by 10%.
Why am I and others like me, being punished because criminals, doctors who prescribe for bogus patients, people who don’t need it and who sell their pills instead of punishing the criminals? We don’t deserve this hideous treatment.
Since they think they’re following your rules, you need to put out a memo that states that the previous memo was not meant to force patients with intractable pain off the hydrocodone or other opioids. That it was just to make sure doctors knew to monitor their patients closely and insure that no health problems or selling of pills problems occurred.
There are no polite words to express my anger and how upset I am that the only thing that works is being taken away because of a misinterpretation.
I want to know what solution you are going to come up with to make this right. For a lot of patients it’s to late. They’ve killed themselves. I hope I never get that desperate. I have been desperate enough to try taking aspirin regardless of the gastric bypass instructions but if I take them more than once or twice a week I start throwing up. It’s almost to the point where I’d rather throw up than have my hand hurt so much. Seriously, sometimes it feels like someone is cutting my scar open again without anesthetic and sometimes if feels like someone is jamming large needles into the ends of my fingers. Right at the moment my hand is tucked in between my belly and my thigh because it hurts so much.
Favoring my left hand has caused my right hand to suffer some ill effects as well although I’m getting pretty darned good at one handed typing. Yeah, all this with one hand.
How about punishing the criminals instead of us law abiding people?
