Dr. Mohammad Nassery

Dr. Mohammad Nassery, a 63 year old who worked at the Ariana Pediatric Neurology at Hyannis was indicted on Friday. He was charged with writing illegal prescriptions (11 counts), making false Medicaid claims (9 counts) and larceny (over $250). A grand jury in Barnstable Superior Court preceded over the hearing.
According to Maura Healey, the Massachusetts Attorney General, Nassery wrote prescriptions that he knew to be medically unnecessary, and made painkillers available to those who had been known to have problems with substance abuse. Medical records show that oxycodone and Percocet were given to patients. Some of the patients who he gave them to were receiving opioids from other prescribers or were concurrently part of substance abuse treatment programs. MassHealth was also falsely billed for these pills by pharmacies because of Nassery’s actions.
Nassery had agreed that he will no longer practice medicine. Work is underway to make sure his patients are referred to other honest doctors. Statistics from Healey’s office show that 4 out of 5 heroin users start using after abusing prescription drugs.
Nassery pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay $10,278.26 to MassHealth. He will not be reapplying for license reinstatement during the probation period either. In order to cover up his dealings with patients, he authorized urine-drug screens and MRI tests before prescribing a controlled substance to the patients. He also overcharged for simple office visits, and billed them as comprehensive medical exams.
