Dr. Torino Jennings

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) – A local doctor is accused of writing illegal prescriptions for online pharmacies and is facing charges in Massachusetts for the same.
Now, similar allegations have been put against him, in Virginia.
Federal prosecutors in Boston have filed eleven charges against Dr. Torino Jennings of Mechanicsville. One of those charges include introducing low branded drugs into interstate commerce and another one is tax evasion. He was practicing medicine at Retreat Doctor’s Hospital in The Fan till now.
Federal court documents were obtained by NBC12 and they reveal that Dr. Jennings wrote between 50 and 100 thousand prescriptions over the internet between 2004 and 2007 for the muscle relaxant and related drugs to people he never examined in person.
The documents state that Dr. Jennings used to receive five and seven dollars per prescription from online pharmacies and did not report major portion of that money in payments to the IRS.
A spokesperson for Retreat Hospital says that Dr. Jennings’ right to practice at the hospital was suspended after they came to know about the matter on Thursday.
He also spoke that they had contacted Virginia Board of Medicine and discovered that similar allegations were made in the Commonwealth as well, between 2004 and 2006.
Documents were obtained from the Virginia Board of Medicine’s website. They reveal that Dr. Jennings paid a $10,000 fine last February for prescribing medications over the internet without visiting in person. The medications included Cialis, Levitra, Ultram and Viagra. One of those people who took these medicines was treated for liver complications, as per the Board of Medicine.
Carmen Catizone along with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy said that 93 percent of online pharmacies operate illegally. They reach out to doctors through journals or web portals and those who are willing to associate for money, go forward.
Catizone said that because pharmacies try to escape and don’t register with states, and also since doctors don’t register, it takes time to identify and track them down.
Jennings is also facing four counts of charges for tax evasion, as he didn’t report hundreds of thousands of dollars in income between the period of 2004 and 2007. Court hearing has not been set for this so far.
