If you are thinking of checking yourself in to their Phsyc ward, go somewhere else! I was there for 6 days and have never been yelled at more in my entire life all together. Most of the techs have power trips there. They make up new rules to yell at you about. I was even threatened by one of the techs there! I was waiting for the nurse to hand me my clothes near the nursing station (as I was checking out that day) and he yelled at me from the dayroom to either go to my room or go to dayroom. I told him the nurse was bringing my clothes. He got more bully like and told me again to go to my room or the dayroom. So, I went to the dayroom. As soon as my butt hit the chair, I heard my nurse say “Where did my patient go?” Mr. Bully’s head dropped because he new he messed up. I walk up to him and say wow, that must suck….for you. He said what? I said you just got “in your faced” and turned to walk to nursing station to get my clothes to leave. He responded “You better hope you never come back here”. I stopped, turned around, and said “What did you say to me?” Then he said “I hope you get better and never have to come back”. He threatened me. There are a lot of bullies in this place. For god’s sake, do NOT submit yourself here if you have mental health problems! They make you worse.
Another incident was the day before I left, I was in the shower. They have no anti-slip pads in there and the floors are extremely slippery. I fell and hurt my hip and neck. There was a small spot on my hip that when touched was a level 10 pain. I thought maybe it was fractured or chipped, or something. They called an intern doctor down who said it isn’t possible to chip a bone. No, I was not on acid. She actually said that. She did some quick tests. Said I was okay and left. Later I asked the nurse for an xray and she said I would have to wait until the morning.
A black woman came in a day or two before I left and she was trying to push everyone’s buttons. While in her room with her roommate and two staff members, she pushed her roommate (assault). The asshole also committed terroristic threatening against her roommate. And guess what? They MADE the abused victim STAY IN THE SAME ROOM WITH HER! No police were called or anything. They allowed it to happen then kept her unsafe for two days. Disgusting.
I could literally write 10 more pages of why you should NEVER voluntarily submit yourself here. Don’t do it. I am not kidding. Worse than prison and they mostly treat you like you are an inmate instead of a patient with mental health problems. If an ambulance takes you to a place due to mental illness, tell them NOT St Vincent.
Dr. Hyatt was my doctor. He mainly made sure I was medicated and for those he liked, he would toss a mini hershey’s bar. He tossed me one each time. But I went through a bizarre thing with him. The first time I saw him, he volunteered information that if I needed an Ativan, I could go to the nurses station and request one. When I first went in, I had a lot of alcohol in my system and once that was out they kept me on valium so I didn’t need it. That tapered off a bit then I felt claustrophobic being locked up so went to the nurses station to ask for an Ativan. They said I wasn’t approved for it. So next time I see Dr. Hyatt, he said I was approved. So, the next day another inmate (patient) totally went off on one of the people who worked there. So bad it gave me a panic attack. I went to the nurses station for an ativan and they told me I am not approved. So the next time I see Dr. Hyatt I tell him this. He said I was approved. Looking right at his screen. So, he said he promised to go to the nurses station and make sure it was fixed. Next day what did i get? Benydryl. WTF!
I submitted myself to the VA hospital in Phoenix due to suicidal thoughts and they were AMAZING. if you are a veteran struggling, don’t call the VA suicide hotline, as they will send you to a crisis center that sucks. BAD! Go straight to VA emergency room.
